NATIONAL BISON DAY 2021
NATIONAL BISON DAY 2021
Available exclusively at H. Lancaster Co. in Aransas Pass, Texas.
The first Saturday in November marks National Bison Day, so I did this piece to celebrate these icons. The American Bison, also commonly known as the American buffalo, once roamed the grasslands of North America in massive herds, and became nearly extinct. With the work of conservationists, these majestic animals are regaining numbers. Bison are featured on two state flags (Wyoming and Kansas), the seal of the Department of the Interior, and on several pieces of U.S. currency!
Smithsonian Fun fact: Though the terms are often used interchangeably, buffalo and bison are distinct animals. Old World “true” buffalo (Cape buffalo and water buffalo) are native to Africa and Asia. Bison are found in North America and Europe. Bison have large humps at their shoulders and bigger heads than buffalo. They also have beards, as well as thick coats which they shed in the spring and early summer.
This original acrylic piece is on a 18" x 24” x 1.5" stretched cotton canvas.
