PROJECT 53 FOR $53 - #14-53
This Friday inspired a more mindful piece. It is one of reflection on the extravagant price paid for the disobedience and sin of all people.
Good Friday wasn't good when the disciples were experiencing it. It was savage, shocking, and completely destructive. They did not understand the victory Jesus was achieving over sin and death. Praise God that when all I see is a cross, Jesus, You see the empty tomb. All year long, we can remember that when all we see is the hardship in our own lives, He sees the victory that will be achieved for His glory.
Reflecting on the events leading up to the cross, you read about the garden of Gethsemane. The word gethsemane is derived from two Hebrew words: gat, which means "a place for pressing oil (or wine)" and shemanim, which means "oils."
During Jesus' time, heavy stone slabs were lowered onto olives that had already been crushed in an olive crusher. Gradually, the slabs weight squeezed the olive oil out of the pulp, and the oil ran into a pit. There the oil was collected in clay jars.
The image of the Gethsemane on the slope of the Mount of Olives where Jesus went the night before his crucifixion provides a vivid picture of Jesus' suffering. The weight of the sins of the world pressed down upon him like a heavy slab of rock pressed down on olives in their baskets.
Isaiah 53: 4-6
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. 6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all.
