This mostly green woodpecker, with red crown, pale eyes, and black face (male has red whisker mark) is the European (or Eurasian) Green Woodpecker. They inhabit open woodland, gardens, and farmland with hedges and scattered larger trees. Unlike most woodpeckers, they feed mainly on the ground, including garden lawns, feasting on anthills and the occasional invertebrate.

Crazy fact: A green woodpecker’s tongue is so long that it coils behind its skull in order to fit inside its head.
