2's on the 22nd in 2022 - May - Two Wings
It's the fifth installment of 2 things on the 22nd of 2022! Today features the two wings of a flying fish. Perhaps, technically it's two sets of wings - as the pectoral fins are wing-like as well as the pelvic fins. There are about 64 species of these types of fish, and they're found in the tropical waters of all the oceans. When they evade predators, these fish leap from the water and glide in the air along the surface. Typical flight lengths are around 160 feet; however, with updrafts, they can cover distances of up to 1,300 feet. The longest flight recorded was for 45 seconds!!
When spotted off-shore, flying fish are an auspicious sign for anglers. Predators such as tuna, marlin, mahi, sailfish, and others can cause these gliders to leave the water. They may be evading a predator that I would like to catch!
