Today, August 20th, is the 8th anniversary of the tagging of Katharine - my favorite great white shark! Ocearch tagged Katharine off Cape Cod, Massachusetts on their 2013 expedition. She was named in honor of Katharine Lee Bates, a Cape Cod native and songwriter - best known for her poem and song "America The Beautiful." At her last satellite transmission, Katharine had travelled 37,711 miles with her tag. It is thought that the battery in her tag had likely stopped working; however, Ocearch received a ping from her tag on November 22, 2020.  I like to think she is out there roaming the ocean - hopefully making some more sharks. Thanks to Ocearch, I knew she was near the Keys in 2014. Ocearch is a data-centric organization built to help scientists collect previously unattainable data in the ocean. They tag many types of wildlife and show their "pings" on an interactive map. The more we know about the wildlife, the better we can protect them and their home. I would encourage you to check out the map (www.ocearch.org), and support the companies who sponsor their expeditions by purchasing some of their gear that is directly invested in Ocearch.
