Found from Massachusetts to southern Brazil, and basically the entire Greater Caribbean, these fish are a prized sport fish. Permit can often be confused with pompano. Permit are much larger reaching 55 inches and 75lbs! However, if you happen to hook a juvenile fish, you can determine its species by looking at its profile. If the dorsal fin (top of fish) and the anal fin (bottom of fish) align, it's a permit. If they don't, it's likely a pompano!
